There are so many different types of holidays we can go on, from a relaxing beach break, skiing holiday, spa break and more. But nothing gives the level of versatility that a city break can. With city breaks, there is usually so much to do, it can be hard to fit it all in!
We went to York last year as we were on the go from the second we got there until the second we left. We tried loads of amazing restaurants in York, did workshops, walked for miles, visited the National Railway Museum and more.
And York is a fairly small city in the UK! Imagine how much you could fit in when you hop on a plane and go abroad to explore European cities and all they have to offer!
Although if you like a UK staycation, I would highly recommend York!
There are tons of different types of activities to do during a city break. Are you like me and don’t tend to enjoy sticking to one thing? I like to mix it up and try and fit in as much as possible.
So here are 8 different types of experiences to try during your next trip:
Trying local cuisine
Food is always a big thing for me whenever I go away. I love trying different food and restaurants and different types of cuisine. If you’re abroad, try and avoid your McDonald’s or Burger King (unless it’s absolutely necessary) and try seeking out local restaurants instead who can offer you the best of the local cuisine, such as this fine cuisine restaurant in Sifnos!
Walking tour
A walking tour is a great way to see the city and also get some exercise in at the same time. By walking, you’ll uncover hidden gems you probably wouldn’t have seen had you been in the car. If you’re on a city break and staying in a boutique hotel, you’ll be in the prime location for a walking tour. Check out theVerina Boutique Hotels in Sifnos, if you’re heading that way!
Have a spa treatment
It’s always nice to fit in a bit of self care during your trip. When it’s been so busy, it’s great to find some time to unwind and relax and heading for a spa treatment is a beautiful local spa is a great way to do that – perhaps your hotel has it’s own spa, so even more convenient!
Get an adrenaline rush
Fancy an adrenaline rush during your trip? Dedicate some time to finding a fun activity that will get the heart racing. Perhaps there’s a nearby theme park where you can let your hair down and have a ton of fun throughout the day or maybe you could try water sports.
Do a workshop
Most cities or built-up towns either in the UK or abroad will offer workshops. In York, we did a chocolate making workshop at the Cocoa Works Factory and it was great. Step out of your comfort zone and try something new. You’ll likely end up with a souvenir to take home with you as well.
Explore religious sites
Although I’m not religious, I’m always keen to explore churches and particularly Cathedrals when I’m out and about because the architecture is spectacular and always worth appreciating, wherever you stand on the religious scale.
Check out a museum
Museums are usually available in most cities and busy places you visit and they’re a great option if you want to learn something new. I think it’s important to learn about the history of where you’re visiting.
Hire a car and drive
And finally, if you hire a car, you can drive out a bit further than where you’re staying and explore the suburbs or even beaches which are a little way out of the city. You could arrange a day trip to the beach, so you still get that relaxing beach day in your holiday!
