Whether you enjoy exercising outside or not, we all have to deal with managing our exercise routine as the weather gets hotter. We’re so used to wrapping up warm when we go out for a run or a long walk and not having to open the windows or turn the air con on in the chilly Winter. But what about when it gets warm – or hot?
Exercise is a vital part of our physical and mental well-being, whether you enjoy weights, running, cycling, kick-boxing, Yoga or something else entirely. But for the most part, most of us with an interest in exercise or sport will have to adapt our routine a little for when the weather gets warmer throughout the year, in order to stay safe.
It’s great to be able to get outside and reap the physical benefits of exercise at the same time as the mental benefits of fresh air, nature and being outside. But we sometimes may have to adapt our routine slightly, especially as we head into Summer and see the temperatures rise to the mid and late 20’s.
So here are some tips for exercising as and when the weather gets warmer:
Get the right workout clothes
Wearing the right gym clothing is vital in the warmer months, we don’t want to avoid overheating. You might want to try a more looser-fit rocker tank or oversized t-shirt. Getting the right gym shirts in the warmer months is really important for your health and comfort whilst you exercise.
Up your water intake
If you’re sweating more due to exercise and the heat combined, then you need to be upping your water intake to avoid dehydration – and sometimes dangerous dehydration. It’s also worth noting that if you’re on some forms of anti-depressants, these can accelerate your dehydration even quicker.
Do outdoor activities earlier or later
If it’s going to be a super hot day, you might want to opt to do your workout earlier in the morning before the sun starts to heat the world up or later in the evening after it’s set. My preference would always be the morning but based on work routines for some people, later at might might be more convenient.
Get some sports drinks for lengthier workouts
You need to stay hydrated with water but any lengthier workouts outside, could call for sports drinks which contain potassium and electrolytes as well, which rehydrate and replenish your body even quicker.
Don’t forget the sun screen
If you’re exercising in the sun – you NEED to be wearing sun screen. Just like if you were hitting the beach. The worst thing is getting burnt so bad that it actually hurts to move, which you don’t want, interrupting your workout routine. Try opting for an SPF 50.
Try water based activities
Nothing keeps you cooler in the Summer than water, so perhaps use the hotter temperatures to get you out of your comfort zone and trying a new water-based activity like surfing, paddle boarding or even just swimming! You can even use the rain as an option and go for a run or a walk in the rain, which will keep you much cooler!
